뒤척이며 꾼 꿈 속에서 난 홀로 걸었어
자갈이 깔린 좁은 길을 따라...
가로등 불빛의 후광 아래서
난 추위와 습기를 막으려 옷깃을 세웠지
네온 등의 불빛 때문에
찌르듯이 눈부셨어
그 불빛은 밤의 침묵의 소리를 깨뜨려 버리고
어루만져 주었지

적나라한 불빛 속에서 나는 만명...어쩌면
더 많은 사람들을 보았지
사람들은 무의미하게 그냥 떠들어 대고 있고,
사람들은 귀를 기울여 듣지 않고 그저 건성으로 듣고 있고,
인간의 노래 아닌 노래라고 만들고 있어.
그리고 아무도 감히 
그 침묵의 소리를
깨뜨리지 못했어

"Fools" said I, " You do not know
silence like a cancer grows.
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words like silent raindrops fell
and echoed in the wells of silence

내가 말했지. " 바보들...당신들은 침묵이 마치
암처럼 퍼지는 것을 몰라...
교훈이 될지도 모르는 내 말을 들어봐
너희들에게 다가 갈지도 모르는 내 팔을 잡아봐
하지만 내 말은 소리 없이 내리는 빗방울처럼
침묵의 샘 안에 떨어져 메아리 쳤어

And whispered in the sounds of silence
사람들은 스스로 만든 네온 신에게
절하고 기도했어
그리고 그 네온이 만들어 내는 문구에
경고의 메시지가 빛났지
거기엔 이렇게 쓰여 있었지
"예언자의 말씀은 지하철 벽에 그리고
빈민가의 벽에 적혀있다"
그리고
침묵의 소리에 속삭였지 

사이먼 앤 가펑클 (Simon and Garfunkel) 은 폴 사이먼(Paul Simon, 보컬)과 아트 가펑클(Atrhur Garfunkel, 기타 & 보컬) 로

이루어진 미국출신의 포크 듀오 뮤지션이다.

1964년 1집앨범 "Wednesday Morning 3 AM)으로 데뷔하였으며 1960년대와 1970년대를 팝계를 품이하였던 이들은 1972년 해체선언을 할 때까지

전 세계 팜팬들의 뜨거운 사랑을 받았다.

영화 <졸업>(The Graduate) 스코틀랜드 구전 민요인 곡을 폴 사이먼이 편곡하여 사이먼 & 가펑클이 1966년 발표한 듀엣곡으로 영화 <졸업>의 OST

영화 졸업-1967년에 제작된 작품으로 한국에서는 1988년에 개봉했다.
